TIPTON, Iowa -- The path to the Cedar County Raceway winner’s circle Friday
night was quite different than Thursday’s for Johnny Scott, but the result was
the same for the 21-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., as he scored his second
straight win in the Hunt for the USMTS National
Championship.
While points leader Ryan Gustin had to use a provisional to get into the WIX
Filters “A” Main Friday, his older brother Richie Gustin Jr. started on the
outside of the front row and led the first lap of the 40-lap feature.
But Scott, who drew the pole position for the second time in as many nights,
blasted into the lead at the end of two laps and proceeded to pace the field for
the next nine laps before the race’s first caution slowed the action.
Scott led one more lap after the restart but Jon Tesch moved around the
outside to take over the top spot through lap 16 when the yellow flag appeared
again.
This time Zack VanderBeek used the restart to take command. After another
quick caution on lap 18 and then another with 27 down, VanderBeek remained the
leader with Scott, Tesch, defending USMTS National Champion Jason Hughes and
nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock giving chase.
Meanwhile, Ryan Gustin was charging to the front and was threatening to crack
the top 5 after starting 25th.
VanderBeek led three more laps after the restart before Scott regained he
point with 31 laps in the books. From there, he held off several challenges from
VanderBeek to take the win and pocket the $2,000 winner’s share of the prize
money.
Behind runner-up VanderBeek and third-place Hughes, Gustin’s impressive run
ended with a fourth-place finish while Tesch settled for the fifth spot.
Sixth through tenth were Shryock, Dereck Ramirez, Al Hejna, Rodney Sanders
and Dustin Boney.
The series invades the Upper Iowa Speedway on Saturday for the 6th Annual
Summer Challenge and the eleventh race of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General
Stores National Championship powered by Swan Energy.
VanderBeek (2005, '08) and Hejna (2007, '09) are both two-time winners at the
at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds bullring. Tesch scored a win during the
2006 campaign and Ryan Gustin won the last meeting in 2009.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand gates will swing open at 5. Hot
laps are slated to begin at 6:30 and the first green flag waves at 7. Also on
the racing card will be the Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Stock Cars and
USRA B-Mods plus USRA Hobby Stocks.
Dustin Boney and his #22 Snickers Modified will be at the Casey’s General
Store located at 401 College Dr. in Decorah from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Coupons good
for $2 off adult grandstand admission will be available at both Casey’s
locations in Decorah plus Cresco and Waukon.
The Upper Iowa Speedway is a 1/4-mile semi-banked clay oval located 1.8 miles
east of US 52 on SR 9, then 1.0 mile northwest on Montgomery St., then northeast
on E. Main St. (at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds). For day-of-race
