SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Stormy Scott has shown a penchant for stepping up his game when the stakes are high, and Thursday night at the Deer Creek Speedway he came through again with a thrilling victory during the second qualifying night at the 2nd Annual World Modified Dirt Track Championship.
Having to qualify through a “B” Main and starting more than halfway back in a field stacked with talent from top to bottom, Scott wasn’t much more than an afterthought prior to the start of the 35-lap main event. But soon after the green flag waved, he served notice that he would not be left out of the party.
Ryan Ruter scored the maximum points possible in his qualifying session and his heat race, which put him on the pole for the feature race. Using the shortest route around the high-banked 3/8-mile oval, Ruter paced the first three laps but Rodney Sanders rode the high line into the lead as they completed the fourth lap.
Sanders continued his charge with Ruter trailing when the first of three cautions slowed the action on lap 12. By this time, Scott was up to sixth from his 17th starting spot.
The yellow flag waved again on lap 14 but the restart looked quite different than the previous. In just two laps, Randy Timms claimed second place with Jon Tesch riding in third and Scott sitting fourth.
Just two laps later, Scott raced side by side with Sanders for the lead, and then completed the pass on lap 17 just as the caution reared it's ugly head again, but this time with the ‘New Mexico Nightmare’ in charge.
Scott continued to run low on the track but Timms was running even lower when he snagged the top spot away with seven laps to go. But shortly thereafter, thick lapped traffic clogged the same line and Scott used the predicament to pounce on last year’s Thursday night winner at the WMDTC.
As they exited turn 2, Timms was slowed by a back-marker while Scott instead slid up and split two lapped cars to power in front of Timms and cross beneath the flagstand with the lead again on lap 33.
Timms was unable to recover and Scott raced to his fifth victory of the season under the USMTS banner.
His first win of the season – and his career – came in March on the first qualifying night of the King of America II Modified Nationals. His second triumph two nights later in the $15,000-to-win finale at the Humboldt (Kan.) Speedway. He switched teams last month and promptly won his first night out with Rowland Racing.
Now the 22-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., will be one of the favorites going into Saturday night’s $25,000-to-win finale.
Dereck Ramirez got by Timms on the next-to-last lap and scored the most points of any driver on Thursday night, assuring himself a spot in the championship race. Sanders held on for a fourth-place finish while Jon Tesch was fifth. Jeremy Payne came from 16 to sixth at the checkered flag.
The top 6 finishers were also the top 6 points earners, and are locked into Saturday night’s main event.
Zack VanderBeek finished seventh in his debut behind the wheel of a Hughes Racing Chassis. Brandon Davis turned his night around by charging from 21st on the starting grid to eighth at the finish while Dan Bohr clawed his way from 25th to ninth. Tommy Weder Jr., driving a Jason Hughes backup car, rounded out the top 10.
Action continues on Friday as nearly 60 drivers are expected to utilize their “mulligans” and take another shot at qualifying for 50-lap WMDTC feature race on Saturday.
Group time trials with a green-white-checkered format will be staged, along with heat races and main events with drivers earning points for their performances in each. The top 6 points earners will join the 12 best from the first two nights and earn one of 18 guaranteed starting spots in Saturday’s finale.
Any driver who has purchased a “mulligan” may forfeit their points on Wednesday or Thursday and attempt to qualify again on Friday if their first night did not turn out as hoped. Any new drivers arriving to compete just two days are also eligible.
Saturday’s program will feature an “alphabet soup” of main events that will culminate with a 31-car starting field in the championship race. Even if a driver has some tough luck during the first three nights of qualifying, he or she still has the chance to climb the ladder of main events on Saturday to earn a spot in the finale.
The 31st starting spot will be auctioned off prior to the start of the race. In last year’s auction, event sponsor Randy Eastvold of Hanson Tire Service won the bidding contest and selected 2007 USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn as the bonus starter.
Nearly $100,000 has been earmarked for Saturday’s championship main event alone, with a total purse of more than $160,000 posted for the four-day extravaganza.
Grandstand gates open at 4 p.m. and hot laps begin at 6:30 on Friday. All times are one hour earlier on Saturday. Tickets are $25 for adults on Friday and $35 on Saturday. Kids ages 12 and under are $10 each day.
Wissota Midwest Mods joined the action the next two nights, racing for $600 to win Friday and a $700 top prize on Saturday night.
The Deer Creek Speedway sits on 60 acres of scenic rural rolling hills with one of America’s most popular state-of-the-art racing complexes and a busy modern campground. The 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval is located 11.3 miles south of I-90 (exit 209) on US 63 (0.7 mile north of SR 16) in Spring Valley, Minn.
