Krohn snaps year-long dry spell with Worthington triumph

WORTHINGTON, Minn. -- Jason Krohn ended a year of frustration Sunday night with a win at the Nobles County Speedway in Worthington, Minn., during Round 7 of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship.

Krohn last rolled into victory lane on Aug. 28 last year in Moberly, Mo., during ‘The Hunt.’ Eight top-5 and twenty top-10 finishes later, the 39-year-old farmer from Slayton, Minn., finally found himself in the winner’s circle again Sunday.

The $2,000 triumph rounded out a near-perfect night for the 2007 USMTS National Champion as he scored the most passing points in heat race action, drew the pole for the main event and then paced all 40 laps of the WIX Filters “A” Main.

While on paper the win looked decisive, it was anything but easy as the quarter-mile oval produced two and three lanes of racing throughout the field.

Heavy lapped traffic midway through the race kept the field close as Jon Tesch, Dustin Boney, Kelly Shryock and Ryan Gustin jockeyed for position behind the leader.

Krohn was able to maintain his edge throughout as Gustin used the back-markers to his advantage and scored the runner-up finish to give him his seventh top-5 finish in seven ‘Hunt’ races.

Tesch held on for third ahead of Boney, Bob Timm and Shryock. Seventh went to Mike Steensma, Zack VanderBeek celebrated his 27th birthday with an eighth-place result, Johnny Scott nabbed the ninth spot and Tommy Myer rounded out the top 10.

After a grueling five-race swing that took the USMTS drivers and their teams to five racetracks in three states, everybody gets a three-day rest before returning to action on Thursday, Aug. 25, at the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo.

Friday, Aug. 26, will see the USMTS debut at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, Iowa, before wrapping up the weekend on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah, Iowa.
