FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. -- Jon Tesch turned in a dominating performance Friday night as Round 6 of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship powered by Swan Energy took place at the Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis.
From the outside of the front row, Tesch took control of the 40-lap WIX Filters “A” Main at the onset, survived a couple quick cautions in the first four laps and then raced unchallenged to the finish line to score his second win of the season and 31st of his USMTS career.
Johnny Scott worked his way up to second from the sixth starting spot, but could not reel in Tesch’s machine and settled for the runner-up paycheck a little more than two seconds behind the ‘Wizard of Watertown.’
Points leader Ryan Gustin took third, with 2008 USMTS National Champion Tim Donlinger fourth and 2007 USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn fifth. Krohn, who started in the 21st position on the 27-car grid, earned his second Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award with his prolific passing performance.
Nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock was sixth, Dustin Boney held on for a seventh-place result, Zack VanderBeek earned eighth, Rodney Sanders came from 17th to ninth and Josh Angst rounded out the top 10.
Gustin continues to sit atop the points in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship powered by Swan Energy with a 106-point bulge over Shryock (674 to 568) while Tesch slightly narrowed the gap and is third with 541 points. Defending USMTS National Champion Jason Hughes is fourth with 535 markers, followed by Scott (496), Krohn (495), VanderBeek (475), Boney (458), Keith Foss (450) and Sanders (443).
The chaos continues Saturday night at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa. Action will also feature the hard-as-nails Iron Man Challenge featuring the hottest USRA Stock Car and B-Mod drivers in the region. Local Hobby Stocks will also compete.
Hot laps begin at 7 p.m. with racing to follow. Race fans can pick up coupons good for $2 off adult admission at both Casey’s General Stores locations in Webster City.
