FORT DODGE, Iowa -- Last year when the USMTS National Tour ventured into Fort Dodge, Iowa’s Mineral City Speedway it was Ryan Gustin getting the win by dealing a last-lap heartbreak to race-long leader Jason Krohn.
The mud-slinging USMTS Modifieds returned to the half-mile clay oval Monday night and this time it was Kelly Shryock delivering the late-race heroics while Gustin was the victim.
Celebrating his 46th birthday, Shryock chipped away at Gustin’s huge lead over the last half of the 30-lap WIX Filters “A” Main, snatched the lead away as they came to the white flag and then powered away to his sixth win of the 2011 campaign.
Meanwhile, Gustin was denied his fourteenth win of the year in the closing laps of the main event for the second night in a row and had to settle for the runner-up honors.
The win was the 170th of Shryock’s USMTS career and netted the nine-time USMTS National Champion $2,000 for his efforts.
Mike Steensma led the first two laps from the outside of the front row and held on for a third-place finish with Colt Mather coming home fourth and Chris Brown finishing fifth in one of Shryock’s back-up cars.
Rodney Sanders, who spoiled Gustin’s victory party Sunday night in Worthington, Minn., took the checkered flag in sixth while Zack VanderBeek finished seventh and garnered his fourth Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award of the season.
Krohn wound up eighth, Chris Spieker was ninth and Ron Ver Beek rounded out the top ten at the flagstand.
Gustin remains the points leader in the Arnold Motor Supply Central States Region with a 43-point advantage over Mather (295 to 252). Shryock jumped to third with 240 markers, followed by VanderBeek (237), Sanders (234), Tommy Myer (225), Spieker (179), Ryan Ruter (175), Shane Demey (163) and Johnny Scott (161).
On Tuesday night the action moves north for a Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region tilt at the Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont, Minn., where Shryock’s racing career started more than two decades ago in the Hobby Stock division.
Shryock won the first USMTS race held at Fairmont on June 20, 2001, but Gustin is the defending champion of the event after winning a thriller last year after a late-race battle with Krohn.
Gates open at 5 p.m. and hot laps start at 7 p.m. with racing to follow. Also on the racing card will be SportMods.
The Fairmont Raceway is a high-banked half-mile dirt oval located 1.0 mile south of I-90 (Exit 99) on CR 39 (at the Martin County Fairgrounds). For more information call 515-295-5555 or 507-235-6996 on race day or visit www.fairmontraceway.com online.
