FORT DODGE, Iowa – With severe storms and tornados lurking in the area Tuesday night at the Mineral City Speedway, USMTS officials trimmed the distance of the main event to 25 laps in an effort to beat Mother Nature to the finish line.
When the checkered flag waved, Jason Krohn was wishing they had made it 24 instead.
Twenty-five orbits of the half-mile dirt oval in Fort Dodge, Iowa, was precisely what Ryan Gustin needed to score his fifth straight USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour victory before a jam-packed grandstand.
Al Hejna led the first lap of the WIX Filters “A” Main before relinquishing the top spot to Colt Mather. Searching for his first USMTS triumph, Mather set a torrid pace as he led the next 17 circuits before Krohn motored into the top spot.
Meanwhile, Gustin worked his way around Mather and into second place as the laps wound down.
With starter Ryne Staley’s white flag waving in the breeze, Gustin closed in on Krohn’s rear bumper as the leaders came upon lapped traffic. As the pair raced through the final turn, a lapped car running the middle line came into play, with Krohn and Gustin splitting the difference.
Gustin went high. Krohn went low. The lapped car stayed in the middle.
As they exited the final turn, Gustin edged ahead and beat Krohn to the stripe by less than 1/20th of a second.
For Gustin, it was his fifth straight win and tenth overall for the 2010 campaign as he pocketed the $2,000 top prize.
For Krohn, it was the second night in a row that Gustin spoiled his hopes for a trip to the winner’s circle. On Monday, Gustin passed Krohn with three laps to go at the Fairmont (Minn.) Raceway. Nonetheless, the 2007 USMTS National Champion has four top-5 finishes in his last five starts.
Mather hung on for a third-place paycheck, three-time AFCO Pole Award winner Ryan Ruter finished fourth and nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock came from 15th on the starting grid to score a fifth.
Brad Williams was sixth, Kevin Pittman snared the seventh spot, Corey Dripps emerged eighth, Bumper Jones nabbed the ninth spot and NASCAR veteran Kenny Wallace rounded out the top-10 finishers.
Up next is the long-awaited return of the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour to Joe Ringsdorf's I-35 Speedway in Mason City, Iowa, on Wednesday, June 23. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30. Also on the racing card will be 305 Sprint Cars.

Wednesday’s show at the I-35 Speedway will be race #6 of 8 over the course of 11 days. Each race is worth a minimum of $2,000 to the winner with no less than $250 to start the main event. More than $100,000 in total prize money is up for grabs during the swing.
NASCAR veteran driver and SPEED Channel broadcaster Kenny Wallace will be in attendance to sign autographs for the fans prior to strapping on his own helmet and competing against the USMTS Modifieds.
