Ryan Gustin and the Gressel Racing crew headed to the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., Oct. 15-17, for the 2nd Annual USRA National Championships and some USRA Modified racing.
Gustin ran fourth in his heat race Thursday and then won his "B" Main to transfer to the main event. In the "A" Main, mechanical problems sidelined the familiar blue No. 19R early on in the race.
On Friday, 'The Reaper' roared from the sixth starting spot and made a dramatic last-lap pass to with his heat race. He finished seventh in the main event.
Saturday saw Gustin win his qualifying heat to earn the 12th starting spot in the 35-lap championship feature. After knocking off several spots in the early laps of the race, the track locked down, took rubber and the race was a follow-the-leader affair for the final two dozen laps. Nonetheless, Gustin earned a fifth-place finish to close out the weekend.
Up next, the team will take the Hughes Chassis modified to the 16th Annual S&S Fishing & Rental Fall Nationals, Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 22-25, at the Southern New Mexico Speedway in Las Cruces, N.M. Sunday’s USRA Modified finale will award $10,000 to the winner and each main event starter will earn no less than $1,500.
